Sarracenia flava is also known as the Yellow Trumpet pitcher plant and it is quite dynamic in its many forms, ranging from solid red to solid yellow with many different gradations in between. S. flava var. rugelii is typically bright yellow in coloration and has a defining red "blotch" on the throat, resulting in its common name of "cutthroat pitcher plant."
Sarracenia flava var. rugelii produces bright yellow flowers in the spring as it puts up its first pitchers of the year. The pitchers of S. flava var. rugelii are lacking in venation, which is common throughout many of the other flava varieties. It is an early starter, being one of the first plants to emerge in our collection and producing its best pitchers in the spring and holding them through summer.
