I'm trying out these new terra cotta pots to see if the cephs will grow well in them. The pots are about 10" tall, so the roots should have room to grow. I'm hoping the ceph roots will benefit from the extra air that you get with terra cotta pots.

I expect that I may run into problems with the soil drying out too quickly, so this will be interesting to see how it goes.

Those are awesome. I want to get a dark purple variety like these for my next ceph. Which cultivar are they?

I'm going to do a similar set up with my next ceph. I think these are less likely to dry out vs my crowded 4 inch pot like I had my 4 year old ceph in...

The ceph in the first close-up photo is a typical. In my experience, more light = darker colors.

I have same pots, hey work great I usually water my cephs everyday cause of the drying

Oh my god the color!! I have yet to grow cephs but I have used large clay pots before. In my experience a 50/50 mix goes from "wet" (the entire media is soggy) to "dry" (the top of the media is dry to the touch, but definitely still moist under the top layer) in just under a week with a sunny window. In full/hot sun it would definitely dry up more quickly than that.

Alvin, I can see you have it topped with sand, but what type of media are you using below? I have only used sphagnum moss for mine so far, but would like to try a more granular mix.

I'm trying a new peat-free mix in these two pots.

The mixes I've used the most, for the longest time, with success are:
2:1 sand and peat.
1:1:1 sand, peat, and fine orchid bark.
I use #12 sand.

I only use pure sphagnum for propagation. But, I know many others have grown mature cephs successfully in 100% sphagnum. I have some pics and info here: http://www.flytrapcare.com/phpBB3/post2 ... ml#p248721
