My son has asked for a sarracenia for his birthday. He wants one that stays smaller, and seeing that this will be our first sarracenia, I want one that is good for beginners. There are so many varieties and most of them seem to be rather tall. Does anyone have some suggestions for us?

Hope this helps out some. You can also buy a baby plant. It'll take a while for it to get bigger if bought as seedling.

a couple smaller ones we have on our household are

S. Psittacina
S. Purpurea

they are low growers, and look cool in my opinion! there are a decent variety of hybrids of each also many of the Purpurea varieties are cool!

Some people consider S. rosea to be a variety of S. purpurea, but regardless of what you call it, it’s a really nice plant for a beginner.

You could also try one of the purpurea hybrids — like mitchelliana or catesbaei.

There’s also lots of complex hybrids with S. purpurea that can be nice.

Some S. rubra varieties are pretty short and S. minor is also short if it’s not var. okefenokeensis.
