I see the recommended mix for heliamphora in Peter D'Amato's The Savage Garden includes lava rock. I can't find any locally, except the kind for landscaping (bigger size).

In a bind, is there any reason to not buy the larger size one, and then break it into smaller pieces?

I tried this. It doesn't work as well as you think it would. The rocks break down much smaller than you want and they have very sharp edges. I believe that pumice is the same as lava rock. You can find small quantities for planting here https://www.generalpumice.com/ although I have never ordered from them.

Also, I've been growing them in something akin to 50% LFS, perlite and orchid bark and they've done just fine too. Let me know if you find a place to get cheap pumice around here though!
