couldn't insect pollination get you past that?
maybe just leaving the pants outside where only morning sun can reach them when they start flowering

/edit
actually I think I read that pings flower during the beginning or just before cold dormancy so I could expect there not to be many bugs flying around
though I'm sure they probably flower during spring too like most plants do

Mexican Pings aren't hard to pollinate, really; they usually flower just after the succulent stage/winter dry period (they don't have a cold dormancy) and yes, it's easier to pollinate them when the flowers are torn into. I'm not rightly sure why there aren't more people selling seed, it may be because these plants can be extremely prolific through other propagation methods (namely leaf pullings), so perhaps it's not considered necessary.
