So I'm new to growing VFT but from what I can see Silica sand is the best sand to use. I'm having trouble finding it in my area(Chicago, IL). The big box stores like Home Depot and Menards have it but it all has coatings and stuff on it. Is there a reputable website that carries it? I did find one on Menards website that looks like it may work packaged by Comfort Flame but my feeling is it's not just Silica sand.

Here is a link to the one at Menards:

Well I get mine at a lumberyard... That's the only place in SD that they have it... If you run out of option I have lots of extra that I could sell to you for a good price. PM me :)

Check building supply companies in your area. That's where I buy mine. They sell 100 lb. bags for less than $10. I prefer 16-20 mesh.

I will have to stop by the big box stores and check the contents in their sand. I'm just looking for a few lbs but I guess a 100lb bag wouldn't be bad then I can pass it down my family for the next 10 generations. Thanks for the input everyone :)

I know its not in lowes or home depot here... There is a pool place here but its too fine of a grit. I just seem to have the worst luck where I am finding plant stuff.

Hope you get everything you need.

I found my silica sand at Menard's for $9 @ 50lb bag. Look in the section of the store with the quikrete and other sand.

Ace Hardware has some, and you can ship to store if they don't have it in stock. I use the same stuff in my aquarium for substrate because it's super cheap. 13$ for 50lbs, or spend 5 times that at a pet store. http://www.acehardware.com/product/inde ... ody_rv_img

While we're on the subject: Lowe's and Home Depot sell silica in 5 lb bags (black and white); It's made by 3M, and it's intended purpose is for smoking receptacles. Anyone feeling brave?
