I have these Sars in a rail deck box with no wind protection at all. I was a little worried about this one that grew pretty tall and was blowing around a lot. I picked up these hooped stakes at Home depot garden center for less than a buck. For shorter Sars like S. Purpurea it won’t help, but seems to work great on the taller varieties which are more likely to be problematic in windy conditions.

Hope this helps someone with a favorite pitcher that is about to blow over

Well, I hope they fill themselves up, I really hope that they may even suck up some of those pesky yellow jackets when were eating on the deck. These plants are gluttons; in the Book Savage Garden, there is an autopsy photo of pitchers that were split open, the pitchers were loaded full with the remains of their summers meals. Don’t have to worry about them getting sick, but I guess they can get so heavy after eating hundreds of bugs that they can topple over by the weight! Although there is no exciting animated moment like a fly trap closing, I find these plants just as fascinating the way they evolved to attract, drug, trap, and confuse their prey from escaping before they make them a meal. If you think about it, catching and retaining a small live bug isn’t the easiest thing to do, But these plants that can’t even move, evolved to successfully catch hundreds.
