This is my favorite plant, but is the bvrown on it bad? if so, what can i do to fix it?

And this 'tarnock is doing the same thing, but also growing upwards, is that also normal?

They seem to be growing normally to me, Andrew. I usually remove the brown vestigial parts (the little flaps). Just pull down and slightly outward and they should come off cleanly. If the rhizome underneath is green or whitish you are good. If it is mushy and brown you have rot. Some brownish soft spots are normal though.

The plant growing up is new to me, but I also wouldn't worry. I bet it is just exploring. ;)
