I saw many non "soil" product such as peat for planting media is sale at many gardening shop. Dry Peat moss OR fresh sphagnum moss may quite expensive in most market here, so i decide to use a other peat soil product such as coconut peat instead, the most abundant peat product in local market here for gardening. Are these substitute good for carnivorous plant or not good ?

Coconut peat can be used,but needs a lot of soaking and rinsing before use

Coconut peat or "coir" is not a bad substitute for other planting media, however it requires an awful lot of soaking and draining in order to be safe to use with venus fly traps, which in turn uses a lot of pure water.

If you would like to try it, go ahead, please let us know the results =]!

Coconut peat is also known as 'coir' which can be used for Venus Fly Traps. On the bad side, it will have to be soaked many times, possibly 10-12, for 12 hours or so at a time. Coir has a high total of dissolved minerals, so like tap water, it will burn the roots.

This will also waste many gallons of pure water.

But if you want to try, go right ahead
