IM a total n00b with orchids but i thought i might do my mum a favor and get some info on them.Unfortunately my mum doesn't know what type she has. She had them for 2 years and they haven't given any flowers. I think its because they are not get enough sunlight except one that is getting roughly 6 hours direct the out side leaves of this one are all dry at the edges and don't look so good.Just like the CP's faq's i want to know how much direct sunlight they, need how wet the soil should be and when they flower. I heard their roots have to be quite dry but the bulb wet by using live sphagnum moss is this true?

Thanks for the replies :D

It's likely that your mom has a Phalaenopsis because they are the most commonly sold orchid species.

They have very easy care requirements. Full sun isn't a good idea for them. They do well under 50% shade cloth or in a windowsill that gets bright indirect sunlight. Keep the temperature between 65°F (18°C) and 85°F (30°C). They don't like to be water logged, so I water mine about once a week. I grow them in live sphagnum or long fibered sphagnum. The sphagnum is basically bone dry before I water them again.

They seem to flower in the winter here. Most of mine are just now flowering or are just getting done flowering.

Hope this helps!

my dad has a whole shade house full of orchids (or awkwards as i call them) :)

im not sure of the exact mix, but they grow them in orchid potting mix (peat coir, looks like bits of woody bark stuff)

ive been trying to figure out how to slip a nepenthes into his shade house, as i think that one will grow fantastic down there... his "awkwards" always get lots of flowers and growth :)
