Actually, they need to be watered. Because they don't live in soil, it's actually more work to water them :)

really? I thought air plants get their moisture by absorbing it from the air using their specialized leaves, except when they are in a hot dry environment. If grown Outdoors, they don't have to be watered at all. They actually can't survive in standing water.

You're not supposed to have them in standing water. But you have to dunk them in water or spray them every other day.
