So that’s what happened!! I’ve waited so long for Triton to be available on your website lol

Yeah, it was a shame that I somehow lost all of my Trition. It is one of my favorites and just a few years ago I produced quite a number of them in tissue culture. Looking forward to growing it again! :D

Do they do a good job trapping insects and sealing shut? Does the scoop end just form a crease or what?

It’s gotten quite large, does anyone know if seed carry these cupped trap or teeth genes? I’d love to see a colorful version of this

well, you could try to cross them with a red. not sure weather cupped traps are dominant or ressesive trate with with regular traps. seeds can carry the cupped genome if
a) both parents are 100% cupped. seedlings are 100% cupped
b) one parent is 100% cupped and other is 100% regular. all seeds carry only ressesive traites and none are cupped
c) both parents are 50% cupped (has ressesive traits). 25% seeds carry 100%cupped, 50% of the seeds are 50% cupped, and 25% seeds are not cupped at all.
d) both parents are 0% cupped (no ressesive or dominant traits). 0%* of seedlings are cupped.
*may be a bit higher due to mutation.
this is a very rough yet kinda accurate representation of the seed dominant stuff.
how to get red cupped)
1st gen: breed red and cupped.
plant 1st gen's seeds
2nd gen: breed the ones that are red (may alredy have cupping trait)
plant 2nd gen's seeds
3rd gen: about 25%** of vfts are red and cupped
** = assuming red is ressesive trait and cupped are also ressesice trait.

I've grown some Triton seeds and have had some offspring look like Triton but get a little color. I should try to keep crossing it to get a colorful Triton. There is a Red Cupped Trap out there, so that might be one to acquire to cross it with...

@Matt so is it genetic? Maybe crossing Triton with a red clone like FTS maroon monster could give us red seedlings that are fairly typical but then crossing those red seedlings with each other could potentially make a red Triton like plant?

I am certainly no geneticist, but I've done enough crosses over the years to have some working knowledge of most of the cultivars in my collection and how "genetic" some traits are. The cupped trap of Triton is genetic, as I've had several offspring from it have that trait. But it doesn't happen in a high percentage of the seeds from Triton, so it must be recessive. Also, the ones that did have the cupping were also very, very green plants with very little red pigmentation, so perhaps the cupping gene is closely tied to the green gene...not sure.

I've germinated several hundred Cupped Trap seeds too and not a single one of them had the cupped traps of the parent plant.

But both red-leafed pigmentation and the cupping of Triton seem to be recessive. The red pigmentation seems to happen about 65% of the time when two red-leafed flytraps are crossed, but it is far lower when one of the parents is not red-leafed.

I'd suspect that it might take a few generations of inbreeding and lots and lots of seeds to get a red-leafed Triton. So it would be a multi-year project for someone!!

Louchapates has a sort of cupped trap too doesn’t it? With weird looking teeth, maybe triton x louchapates might do it. To me cupped traps is the small trapped version of Triton and louchapates is the longer trapped version lol

Yep, Louchapates might be a good breeding candidate as well when trying for a red cupped trap or very colorful cupped trap flytrap. I agree with you that Cupped Traps is a small version of Triton and Louchapates is the long trapped version, like Alien! But Louchapates doesn't quite fuse together at the distal (far) end of the trap, so it's not entirely cupped. Also, Louchapates is a very weak grower and Triton is very vigorous. We should hope for the vigor of Triton and the color of FTS Maroon Monster!!
