Tomatoes or potatoes? I read somewhere that they have adaptations to kill insects, not sure how true it is though.

True. But they also believe that while many plants can capture insects, they can't consume them. Rather, the insect dies and is knocked off by rain or wind. The body then decomposes, and the nutrients are taken up by the roots.

But my new guess is Shepherd's Purse.

Shepard's purse was a pepper supplement in England. China uses it a lot! I have even eaten it and never knew it was carnivorous (it tastes like peppery grass). The seeds create mucilage when wet, making it capable to catch nematodes, but can't digest it.

That was going to be my first guess, but something told me no. I need to start listening to my gut more.
Time to think of a noodle scratcher. Hmmmm.

The stems and leaves are typically at soil level, and sometimes below the surface of the soil.

Negative, it's a carnivorous plant.

There are only 7 known species in the genus.
