I don't know much about the sand, but a good start would be to look at the ingredients or whatever. Check to see if anything was added such as fertilizer and stuff like that.

I use Pool filter sand. It's about $10 for 50 lbs. And you can get it at a pool supply store.

It's probably fine but a simple test is to take a cup of vinegar, add a little sand to it, and if it fizzes don't use the sand for your acid loving plants.
