Got a nice surprise today. I have some volunteer Milkweed growing in a planter and this afternoon I saw a fat happy Monarch caterpillar munching away.

One of the few caterpillars that are almost as pretty as the butterfly itself!

I used to raise them by the dozens as a kid. Now you can hardly find them around here.

I had a swallowtail on my dill plant. Only until it gorged itself. Then it left. I named it pickles for the few days that I was able to watch it. They are amazing.

Nice! I can't remember the last time I saw a monarch but I did get some milkweed growing so I'm hopeful for the future. Though right now I get to watch cinnabar moth caterpillars munch on ragwort.

we hopefully one day in the not so distant future will be setting up small pockets of native habitat specifically for monarchs/pollinators scattered around our property but unfortunately haven't been able to get started on it!
