Hi all, I am completely new to orchids so please bare with me. My husband picked this orchid up for me at Lowe's a few days ago. I have never had orchids but I have been going through the posts and articles here. I was just wondering if this is a new bloom forming? I live in the U.S. and its summer time here so isn't it a little late/early for blooms to form?

That's an existing part of the flower spike.

What is it potted in? Pure sphagnum? You'll want to be very careful not to over-water there.

Yes, it appears to be pure sphagnum. I plan to repot it into some orchid mix, I just didn't want to do so while it's flowering. I haven't watered it since I got it because it was pretty moist. Thankfully it's in a clear plastic container so I can tell when it's dry.
