For checking seed viability, you normally end killing the seeds, because the procedure is to use a portion of the seeds, add some chemicals, note the change in color and then report results, that is the quick destructive method, the normal method is using the normal germination, counting exactly the quantity of seed you are adding and then count germination observed.
