The flytrap's growth slows down or may even completely stop for weeks. I believe it's because the flytrap is using most of its energy trying to digest everything.

Next to growing a flower, digesting bugs is the most exhausting this a VFT can do. This is why the trapping mechanism is designed to allow smaller bugs to escape. It's natures way of giving the VFT a break from the tiresome process of digestion without getting a worth-while amount of energy from the bug.
