How would I sterilize moss from outside so that I could use it for my plants? Without killing it, of course :) Is it even possible?

Pour boiling water through it to make it quasi-sterile. If you want it to be fully sterile, you need to autoclave it (cook it in a pressure cooker at 15 psi for around an hour).
Both these options will kill it, however, so if you want it to stay alive, you won't be able to sterilize it.
