Anybody know what this is? It was about 1.25" - 1.5" across and spent most of the day guarding my mailbox...

Yes, it is a Tiger Bee Fly. My sister and I were just discussing this a couple days ago. We've been seeing a lot more than usual too, usually on nectar producing plants because that's what they eat. Here's the site where we identified it:

And yes, for some reason they usually do stay perched in one spot for a very long time. Mine seemed to be "sleeping" on my Lobelia cardinalis for a whole day:

The site I linked to says they lay their eggs in carpenter bees nest. That's the only thing to which they're harmful. They don't hurt humans, animals *or* plants. If anything, they help to pollinate flowers, just like bees and hummingbirds do. Just enjoy their unusual appearance. Not all bugs are bad!
