Probably needs calcium. People forget neps need calcium especially if your giving it distilled or RO water. A small amount of gypsum sprinkled on the surface which is then watered in will work or water it a bit with tap water. That should fix it ;)

That’s not variegation. It’s chlorosis must likely caused by calcium deficiency. You can tell since the veins are still green. If not corrected the growth point can die

You seem to know what you're talking about so I'll just say you're right. If it was variegation I don't think it would suddenly disappear like that.
