burning laser

So I got bored and started taking apart a dvd burner and got the laser diode out. All I get when i hook it up to any battery is a faint red glow... Any suggestions?

Don't look directly into it

Really the lens on it in it's current configuration is going to limit it's use...I'd look into doing something like this:

Seriously though, since it is a class 3A laser product you do need to exercise care...

Id say unless you REALLY know what your doing with any electrical/laser items, dont mess around with them.
