Can a Venus Fly Trap close on its own without being triggered?

No because they have three trigger hairs the insect has to touch in order to make it digest it's prey. And in order for it to close completely the trigger hairs have to be touched multiple times making the Venus flytrap think it has an insect.

It was probably a small insect that was able too quickly escape.

If a plant is stressed it can close and lose traps, also frost can do it or even dormancy. Where are you keeping it and what are the conditions?
