Can you use essential oils to deter pests, such as aphids? If you can, how do I mix and apply the solution?

It's probably possible, I know peppermint can deter many pests, even rodents. But, rather than apply the oils to surfaces, I would soak cotton balls with it and put them around areas you want to deter pests from. That way you can re apply oil to the cotton ball when possible, or throw it out as needed, and you don't put substances in or on your pots that could create other problems.
