O. basilaris is by far the most common here, and is *technically* edible, but I've never tried it. The paddles also contain a very tiny amount of mescaline. Not enough to get anyone high, but it may pose a similar issue as poppy seeds and opioid tests.

We also have some yucca varieties with edible fruits, but they need to be prepared before you eat them. Same with mesquite. Mesquite flour is great in baked goods.

Just collected some A. pungens berries. For those interested in edible fruits, this one is a good one. If you steep the berries in water you get a drink not unlike apple cider. The berries don't have a good texture, but the flavor is amazing.
