I put the flytrap in the basement windowsill. It’s facing south and is around 50 f right next to the window. It’s been there for two months, and I cleaned up the died back leaves today. Done traps are red, and the new growth is compact. Is it dormant? This is my only option to overwinter, so hopefully it’s okay. I noticed a spider in a trap, is it supposed to eat over winter? Thanks for your opinions in advance!

Doesn't look like an extremely dormant flytrap, but it could be in a mild dormancy. Did it have upright-growing leaves this spring and summer?

It is fine if they catch food on their own or if you want to feed them, but they typically don't catch much through the winter months as most bugs are dormant as well.

It did have larger leaves and some were more upright. It was outside all summer/fall. When the nights got cooler, leaves started to die back and it seemed more compact lower growth. I’m not going to feed it purposefully. The highs are in the teens outside now, it’s a drafty window so maybe the dormancy will get better during the coldest parts of winter.

As long as it gets sufficient light, it should be good in that window then! It looks like the new leaves are showing signs of light deprivation. Perhaps you can get it outside from time to time for some full sun?

Spring is arriving fast! I started my first round of garden seeds indoors this past week and brought up the VFT from the basement window into the greenhouse as well. Time will tell if the dormancy worked.
