Why does my sphagnum loss for my Venus flytrap feel really slimy? Is this normal?

It's most likely algae. You may be keeping it a tad too wet and/or it might not be getting enough direct sunlight. Lower quality sphagnum moss is also more prone to algae growth.

the moss can also be too tight in the container. ive loosened up the moss and it dries out better and seems to help.

As above, it is either packed too tightly, or not enough sun or air movement.
