i was wondering if i could cut off black leaves or if that would hurt the plant, also, should i cut them at the base?

Well you should cut off the dead leaves it cause the plant to be more prone to Fungal infections and mold.. yes as close to the riz as you can but don't cut the riz..

As long as you don't keep your plant excessively wet, the black leaves most likely won't hurt anything. I usually wait until they dry up completely and I can just gently pull them off without having to cut them.

Individual traps don't go dormant. The trap is either alive or dead (green or black).
