I haven't owned one but from what I read it does make sense. If the membrane is pumping out the concentrated waste then the membrane filtering that has to clear all that up and keep it in there accumulating or draining it somewhere else

I'd imagine it would push out water with fairly low levels of contamination through the main line while it is new, then the waste water being as bad or worse than what came in since it's concentrating even further. I'm not sure how thorough those filters are since it's such a complicated multi-stage system. It'd be stressed out quite a bit since it would be receiving mostly waste water, requiring it to filter a lot more to get semi-decent water. Depending on how long it lasts it may not even be worth it unless the water coming out is fairly low on TDS, or maybe it'll be low enough you can use it for something else(outside gardening for non CPs)
