I'm a 27 year old student and new to the world of carnivorous plants. I had a VFT for a few months but it died after I re-potted it (completely my fault). I recently bought a selection of plants from a specialist and am now a proud owner of a VFT (I'm calling him Audrey 3), a Sarracenia Mitchelliana x S. leucophylla, a Huntsmans cup and a Drosera capensis.

The VFT has been flourishing in the past couple of weeks - lots of new growth and beautiful, large red-lined traps. The two pitcher plants are showing new growth as well and the sundew managed to come through the post with a minimum of stress (it's catching small flies like there's no tomorrow - probably says something about my flat!). My only concern is if they'll make it through the winter. I have a balcony which is quite sheltered, I could put the plants outside during the winter but I'm wondering how best to cover them. Should I buy a plastic box and keep them completely out of the rain?

I have limited space but would love this to be the start of a large collection.

I've been looking at the photos other members have posted and I'm so jealous! I would love a greenhouse but that's a few years in the future, when I can afford a house :).

Hello Michelle in Scotland! Welcome to flytrapcare.

Congrats on your newly started CP collection. It sounds like you have some nice plants to start with.

Your plants should do ok outside on your balcony in the winter. It would be best to shelter them a bit. If you put them up against the side of the house, that should help keep them a bit warmer. Though they can tolerate light freezes, it's best not to let them freeze. Also, you should try to keep them a little dryer in the winter otherwise you could have problems with them rotting in soggy soil.

If you have a cool windowsill, that could work fine for dormancy as well.

Wow, what a warm welcome!

Is anyone here from Florida? I'm going over next year for a couple of weeks and I've been told there are a lot of CPs that grow in the wild in the Panhandle. It would be a nice change from Universal Studios and Disney to be able to go to a State Park and see pitcher plants growing free :). Any recommendations?

Welcome aboard! Let your plants get abused by rain and all that during the winter. If it gets below freezing, put them inside in a cold place. Stick them back outside once the temperature is above freezing. You'll get the best dormancy that way!
