Basically you buy some dry ice and melt it in an enclosed area with the plant (like a terrarium or a plastic storage bin) and the resulting lack of oxygen kills most pests, though perhaps not mites. Sounds quite interesting and ingenious.
I tried it and the CO2 killed the leaves but not the thrips :(

If you have ever seen an aquatic plant producing bubbles of oxygen underwater they float up and pop.
I imagine that since Carbon dioxide is heavier than air( generally) the oxygen bubbles the plant produces will float up and out. Just leave the top open and in a place without drafts.

If you are into snakes this is how feeder mice are killed before they are frozen. It doesn't take long to begin to work. I imagine insects don't take long either!
