My new plant has been here for a few weeks and it seems to be doing ok after losing a few
dead or dying leaves which I trimmed off.
I'm not quite sure how to store it for the winter here in CT.
Does it need light and coolness?
I could place it in an attic (unheated, with good light) or in a basement
walk-in closet that has natural light but is a bit warmer,
or I could keep it near a window just like a regular houseplant.
Also, does it need water during the winter?
I know I have a lot of questions and I will read the FAQ's too but I just wanted to
intro myself. I'm 69, retired from the computer field and happily married, have a
really LARGE dog, enjoy gardening, reading, tennis and zipping around town on my Vespa.
That's all for now.

Hello "Iagoman"

Welcome to Flytrapcare!

Well for Dormancy You need to provide the plant with cold temperatures below 50F. I'm pretty sure you're attic will do just great! as long as there is no heat or temperature going up above 50F. Flytraps can survive in freezing temp's but they can't be in those temps for long. The best place is to grow them outside, naturally. Yes, the plant needs to watered in the winter. Don't worry if the water freezes it's normal. But Let's see what other people have to say. An so glad you could be apart of the Flytrapcare Family :D

Hello Iagoman and welcome to flytrapcare!

As Allen said, the attic would be a great place to winter your plant. And yes, they need to be watered over the winter, but much less than in the spring and summer. Just keep the soil barely damp to avoid root rot.

Thanks for the bit of an introduction. What kind of LARGE dog do you have? And what did you do in the computer field?

Good luck with your plant and let us know what you decide to do!

Thanks you all for the help. My VFT will vacation in our attic till spring. It's usually pretty cool up there.
As for our dog Riley. He is about to be 10 years old. He's a combination of
Shepherd/Collie/Husky/Golden Retriever and Great Pyrenees. He weighs 100 lbs, is tall and can talk!
I have a video of him on UTUBE. He says "Where were you?", especially after I have been away from the
house for more than an hour.
If you want to see him, cut and past the following...
