I found this creepy cocoon/larva in some garden soil. It was 2.5-3" long. Not sure what it is. The top looks like a cocoon but the bottom like a larva and the tip was slowly wiggling. Caution, it will haunt your dreams.

Looks like a type of hawkmoth pupae. Haven't seen any moths in over 8 years so I can't ID it for you. soz.

That's what most insect pupae do to scare off predators. Not that creepy. :lol:

You're right, it does look like a hawk moth pupa. I figured either moth or beetle. We have hummingbird hawk moths around here, I wonder if it was that. I'll never know cause I tossed it over my fence. That's definitely not a critter I need ravaging my garden again.

(Just saw on wikipedia hummingbird hawk moths supposedly don't live on this continent...but I've seen something that looks like that)
