Any Canadians here that can pitch in on what sand they use? I'm looking for #12 to #16. All the pool filter sand I can find is #20 which is too fine.

Best wishes on that...keep your eyes open for chicken with teeth and unicorns, too. ;) They're all in the same category down here in the southeast USA.

If you can't find silica sand, you can try crushed granite chicken grit - just be sure there's no additives.

Are there any farm supply stores in your area? Many of them have filter sand in medium and coarse sizes.

Sandblaster suppliers often have usable sand.

What about aquarium stores, particularly salt water? They usually have silica sand. Just make sure it doesn't contain small bits of shell or coral, and rinse it well before use.
