California endangered species laws do not recognize insects as a viable classification of critters to be listed as endangered. As a result, California chose to re-classify bees as fish, which do have protection under their laws.
So, in Cali, you can now call them bish and not be offensive.

Thing is that the definition of a "fish" has to have gills, and live wholly in water. Bees seem to live on land, not water... in fact they drown in people's pools.
