So I just searched the word "cup" at the top left, onnnn the main home page of forum, it said no results that can't be right.. why does it do this?

Please could you post a link to the page you searched on? I've just done a quick test and the search feature seems to be working OK, so it might be specific to the actual page you're using.

I entered the word "cup" and it told me "No results found".

I entered other search strings and it searched successfully . I guess there are some words it just doesn't like.

Oh duh, I didn't look at the advanced search -- sorry about that. Yes indeed, it seems that some words aren't liked by the system. It could be because the word "cup" is only three letters long; some search engines don't like short words.

"Retired" in 2017.

Most forum search engines ignore words 3 characters or shorter to cut down on wasted CPU time. Just think about someone searching for a short phrase with "for" or "and" in it and the search engine not ignoring those words.

That's correct. Search terms have to be at least 4 characters long or longer.
