I look after a pond and I got some water Lilly's from another pond that had plenty, I just cut a big bit of rhizome off what had plenty of leaves on and the are growing well, for the soil I just used soil out of the garden and a square bag pot for ponds, I looked it up on the net and they said save money on the special soil rubbish and just use garden soil, the Lilly's have been there since last year, they died back during winter but this year they have come back lovly

Exactly, use common garden soil, its the best one. In aquariums what is done then is to cover all up with a layer of grit before filling it up, so the nutrients do not escape as quickly, but it is not normally necesary in ponds.
