I repotted my new young carnivorous plants (see images below). How they arrived and after repotting.

I did this for the first time by myself and i don't know if I did it correctly.

Are these pots okay/too big? Does this have advantages/disadvantages?

If I put water in the tray under the pot will this reach the top?

For the Cobra Lily I chose a big white pot so the roots stay cool in the summer.

I also keep rain water in the fridge for it, that's also why it has a smaller tray inside the big one.

Once the nighttime cold temperatures are passed I plan to put them outside.

Any advice is welcome.

Greetings,

Lewis

Looks OK to me. Where did you get you Cobra Lily? Very nice looking indeed. I keep mine in an Aquascape bowl I bought on Amazon. Mine sits in a mesh container surrounded with LFSM. The water flows constantly through the mesh potter. I use distilled water from the fridge and on occasion drop several distilled ice cubes in it. It seems to love this and is growing like crazy.

the media looks like peat? Did you add water and force the peat to soak it in before you used it? If not you need to, dry peat is hydrophobic and will never wick or soak up water.

@andynorth, I got mine from a website in the Netherlands, I'm from Belgium myself. It all arrived in decent state. I even got a small thank you card and a folder with some info about how to care for the plants. I only put in cold rain water from the fridge, I don't have an option to put it in flowing water unfortunately. I might make some rainwater ice cubes in the summer and put them on top.

@optique, We call it turf, I've used it before on my venus fly trap, sarracenia and sundew and they had a great year. I did not soak it. I took the plants out of the smaller pots that were soaking wet, left a bit of that media around them and them put them in the turf. I thought if I put a water bowl under the plants the water would rise to the top. I'll try to look into soaking the media. Thanks for the advice :)

Well, very nice looking CL indeed. If you want to look in to a flowing water type system let me know. I have several different ways it can be done. One is simply using a styrofoam cooler and a small aquarium or other submersible water pump. Very small investment and it mimics their growing conditions. I keep distilled water in fridge and ice cubes in freezer. I find they love ice cubes as a treat now and then. I keep cold water flowing through their root system. I started building a pond last year but had to halt as I injured my back (Not from building the pond). I have a plan to mimic their conditions they grow in. I am a few hour drive from where they grow. I want to take a trip down to their natural habitat in Oregon once I am healed. Good luck with your plants.

Let me put a couple things together and I will post links for you.

Edit: So this first one is a pretty simple concept and is from user @mcgrumpers from 2019. It is an ingenious setup and quite easily accomplished. post342338.html#p342338

This second one is a little more complex and I am going to "borrow" portions of it when I finish building my pond that I started last year.

This last one is what I use but modified as I did not care for their water pump since it was too small and I added a "Y" connector to utilize both sides of the growing area. Mine sets in the middle of the bowl. I wrapped my CL in LFSM, placed inside a small mesh planter, placed that inside a small mesh bag like those used for covering sarrs flowers, etc. They also sell a larger, outdoor version of it.

Planted Feb 7th, 2024-This looks way larger than it is. In reality it is only about 4 to 5 inches tall, camera was just up closer.

@andynorth, I might just look for an Aquascape bowl, I'll have to put the CL in a much smaller pot to do it though. I know just the spot for it in the garden where I also have a plug for the fountain.
