So at my Lowe's there is only one type of sand that remotely would be usable for CPs and that's play sand. It is quite fine and I don't know if it is helping with anything when I add it to peat. Has anyone used play sand before? Is it ok to use? What about the sand you use for giving traction to your driveway after an ice rain or snow? Thanks!

Play sand is usually not 100% silica so it would be harmful to your plants.

They're not completely interchangeable but you can use peat and perlite without sand. Sand is denser and retains more moisture than perlite, but drains well. Perlite gives you good drainage and makes your media more airy, but the downside is much of it will slowly make its way to the top if your media frequently floods in heavy rain. It takes a while though so perlite is still a good option.

A good source of sand is pool filter sand. I have got 50lb bags for $5.00 or less at most hardware or pool supply stores.

It is a great source of sand for aquariums too since it has a very low dust content right out of the bag.

I enjoy using perlite especially if i'm too lazy to wash the sand. It leaches very little minerals if any at all. Just personal preference. My dews are grown in 50:50 peat perlite
