It's basically what I do for work so I make my own stuff all of the time. I'm not sure what's "best" but I use 3/16" and 1/4" clear clear acrylic, flame it and bevel the edges so it looks good. Water tight and they hold several plants for the hot weather. You could go with Poly if you need them to last 10+ years. ABS and PVC or expanded PVC are also fine. They are all FDA approved food grade materials.
