Update on the grafts. Sop far i've been successful with like 3 out of 12  . Some from not doing enough research and some from just using understock that was too small. I have 2 Beni Kawa and 1 Tamukeyama starting to leaf out nicely though so hopefully theyll be a success.

A failed graft. If you look closely the graft is turning black at the grafting point and up top. I'll be taking the failed graft off and trying to reuse the understock for another graft.

Well considering these are your first attempts a 25% success rate probably isn't too bad.

Think about it, you just took a piece of one living organism and attached it to a different living organism and get them to grow together.

Well all of the seeds I bought must have been very old. I have a few sprouts I'm going to take out and ant up tomorrow but to say I had poor germination would be a huge understatement.

2 out of 3 of my grafts failed so that 25% is more like 8.3% lol. At least my sango kaku was the survivor and no I'm not giving up. Next time I'm going to buy bigger root stock.

I also found a huge red jm at wally world for $20. I snatched up the healthiest, went back a couple days later to get another and they were all gone:(. 6 ft red jm for $20 is a crazy deal though.

Pics tomorrow.

This was a picture sent by phone to me so its tiny, but these are at Aldi (discount grocery store). I didn't even know they sold trees. They're not 6ft tall looks more like 3' to 4' but they are only $12.99.

Wow! That's crazy good. My local nursery usually carries about a dozen or so varieties but they run at least $50-$60 for small 2 foot trees.

The psychology of it is pretty interesting. I still feel like $60 for a tree is a lot but I've spent more than that on several of my Sarrs and close to that for several of my VFTs.
