These are some photos from an owl banding project that is ongoing throughout October and November at the Indiana Dunes State Park (among other places as well). A small group of volunteers work to mist net saw whet owls (Aegolius acadicus), record data, and band them as part of a nationwide program called Project Owlnet. When I went last night they had caught two saw whet owls, three screech owls (which were also banded), and one adult barn owl (a very mad barn owl, but it was not banded). The barn owl was caught just before midnight. Surprisingly these owls, with the exception of the barn owl, were very calm throughout the data collection process. None of the owls caught that night were previously banded. It is a neat program to see, so it may be worth checking to see if there is a station nearby that is active and allows visitors when they are banding :). http://www.projectowlnet.org/

Thank you for posting this! I am interested in birds of all kinds, but especially birds of prey, so if you get the chance to do something like this again and take photos, please do!

You're welcome! Birds of prey are definitely interesting. I am hoping to get the chance to do this again soon, but hopefully as a volunteer the next time around. Either way I will be taking far too many photos. I'm really hoping they perform snowy white owl banding over the winter again :D.

 If they do, be sure to take pictures! I draw, so it would be nice to draw a snowy owl, especially close up!

I certainly will :), I tend to take a lot of photos when it comes to things like this. Oh cool, do you have any pictures of birds that you have drawn already?

You might enjoy the few photos that others took from this past winter in the following link. http://indianadunesbirding.wordpress.co ... -official/ There was one photo someone took of a snowy owl on the shelf ice that looked really nice, but I can't seem to find it :(.

Yes, I do have some, but I am beginning. You probably don't want to see them.

Disregarding my above post, here is a drawing I did. And some pumpkin photos that I carved.

Thanks for sharing those! I think they look great. How long have you been drawing for? As for the owl pumpkin carving, I will take a wild guess of barn owl. It is neat seeing pictures of birds of prey just before the grab ahold of their prey. Too bad I have only seen that from a distance with the red tail hawks that nest near the house.

Thanks!

Darn! It is a snowy owl, or was supposed to be. If you could not figure what it is, then probably it does not really look like one. I have been drawing my entire life, but just got interested in birds (and plants) a couple years ago. I have been drawing for a year and a half. I have some pictures of a red shouldered hawk that I took a week ago, I got within ten feet of it to take the pictures. I will put them on my seedling photo update thread.

I have begun taking private drawing lessons, but mostly to paint.

I'm terrible with identification of birds (I mainly know songbirds, but even then I'm still pretty bad). Oh cool, it will be interesting to see what you can do with painting as well if you end up sharing those as well at some point. That is awesome that you were able to get that close to get pictures of the hawk. It must have been fairly distracted by something.

It was eating a snake, that is probably why.
