When I opened the front door this morning, this thing was sitting on the storm door, right at eye level. It seemed pretty content to stay there while I got some pics. Anybody know what it is?

Around here they call those mosquito hawks because people think they eat mosquitoes. They actually don't. They are a form of Mayfly.

We call them mosquito eaters around here... just looked it up and you're right! Only the larvae have been known to eat mosquitos (and only in their larvae form as well) occasionally.

From what I'm reading, "Mosquito Hawks" and "Mosquito Eaters" are names for certain types of Crane Flies. So it's all good.

My flytraps and sundews engorge themselves full with those every spring. It makes a mess of my pots...I have to pick them all out later. It always amazes me how, with those long legs, they manage to sink their bodies down into the flytraps to get caught.
