Increase exposure to natural sunlight and improve ventilation - a small fan will help move the stale air and hopefully stop the fungus.

It is possible that mold and fungus can adversely affect seeds and seedlings, and for that reason it is best to avoid the conditions that can lead to the growth of these.

I just had a similar situation, while germinating seeds both in pure water and on peat moss/sand mix. White filmy residue on the seed coats before germination. Must have been something on the seeds.

I freaked out a little, then decided to wait it out... being sure to increase sunlight and ventilation as per the advice of the board members here. I didn't bake the seeds... just set them out in the easy morning sun for about an hour a day; lid off of course.

This fixed it! The white stuff went away. Also, it seems that the mold might have helped the seeds germinate. Might just be my perception, though.

Good luck bud!

Some will float, others will sink. It will not affect the germination of the seed.

I was playing with the timing of this over the last week. You don't want to move them too late, it seems, as they will not be as strong. May be its my subjective perception, but I've planted them at several different points: when you could just see green, all the way to seeing another seeds length of green sticking out. Seems like the ones with a little less green did a little better.

So in other words, once you can see some root sticking out try to plant them. Probably when you see about 1 mm of green growth. Feel comfortable planting them anytime after you can see green, however.

A side note: I haven't got a red one to grow yet! I've seen several seedlings with the red root sticking out, and each time I got really excited. I heard they were a little more temperamental, so I let them go a little longer in the water. Alas, NONE of them took. Hopefully some more come up... I think I'll get them out of the water ASAP next time.

I have my VFT seedlings in ambient humidity, no problem. Granted, my ambient humidity is around 80 percent quite usually.

Its best, from what I read, to let the seeds sit for as long as you can stand it. I've read accounts of seeds taking months, maybe even a whole season to germinate. If you have some not doing anything, throw them in with some mature plants. the seedlings just might take off some day.

I have some seeds that have been germinated for going on two months now. One of them just cracked open the other day.
