Finally, seeds wake up everywhere: in distilled water, sand & peat, sand & coir, sand & perlite and perlite & coir. Seeds germinate fastest in distilled water. In sand & peat seedlings seem stronger. In sand & coir all seeds germinate but leaves are a little bit yellow. In perlite & coir, slow and only one seed survives. :)

i just wanna say that this is the coolest experiment i ever seen!!!!
looks like you got a little bit of algae in your sand and peat. i thought it help it prevent that?
germination in water IS very fast, did you keep the seeds floating? or submerged?
well by now you should plant them in one of your mixed.
the next time i germinate in the water, i will leave them in longer until most the roots have formed and have a better chance of surviving!!
THANKS!!!

Nickrober,
Seeds are in clear plastic cups and cover by saran wrap to keep high humidity.

Kevinqwe,
I just drop seeds in very shallow water, about 1/8 – 1/4 inches (~1 centimeter); most of them float on the surface of water. Yep, I will plant seedlings soon and I will also keep one of them in water longer to see what’s going on.

Thanks all for your comments. :)

I found that totally submerged seeds in only water don't make it past the first pair of leaves. Looks like you have them exposed to air too. It'll be interesting.

If there is an OSH in your area you can probably find perlite. I get my perlite in the big green bags they have. And if they dont have any they can probably order it for you.

If you have a Home Depot anywhere near you they sell "Pool Filter Sand" by a brand called Pavestone...it is silica sand and it is like $5 for a big bag. You can usually find perlite at your local nursery, cause the perlite the big stores sell is always freakin' Miracle Gro.

Awesome experiment Kinh! Thanks for the update and for doing this experiment for everyone to learn from.

I've noticed this as well in vitro. If I make the media too soft and the seeds get below the surface, or if I push them too far down into the media, the growth "stalls" shortly after germination until the seedling gets air.

Update: Seedlings are growing well in sand & peat, sand & coir, perlite & coir but not in sand & vermiculite. Seedlings which were growing in pure water were transferred to sand & peat and they seem happy. GA works well with Sarracenia stratification. I grew Sarrra. for over without germination but after dip in GA solution for 48 hours few of them germinate right away. Some update pictures for fun. Cheers. :)

Very cool Kinh! Thanks for the update.

I've heard that vermiculite has too many minerals in it to grow healthy VFTs. Looks like your experiment is proving the same.

It looks like the seedlings in sand and peat and in sand and coir look the best.

What kind of Sarr seedlings are those? Any of them from the seed I sent you?
