How cold does it get in the dead winter where you live? We usually get as low as -20 for a week or two during an especially cold winter.

Your -20 remark made me lose my train of thought and not reply with our low temps. Usually if we hit in the mid-twenties we're about normal. Every few years we get down into the teens. And then once in a blue moon we may flirt with 10F...once in a blue moon, mind you...definitely a rarity. The thing is that usually our freezes don't last long...only overnight and then it gets above freezing the next day. During the winter we may even have some 70-80 degree days. It's all over the place down here! Nobody down here is overly concerned about cold weather and water pipes...until the "hard freeze" is predicted...then everybody is scrambling to wrap pipes, get heating lamps going on exposed pipes, etc., etc.,...me included, usually. Lots of water pipes are less than a foot underground...many less than that.

Yeah, it has gotten as low as -40 here a few years ago. It's not fun. And I don't know how 70-80 degrees is even possible!! You basically just don't have winter when it's that warm!

Years ago me and my gardening buddy (we go back a *long ways*!!!) went swimming in the pond down behind the house...on Christmas Day. ;) To be honest, it was quiet chilly, but once out we warmed up quickly. It's really a rollercoaster ride down here in regards to weather, and particularly for temperature during the winter. I've seen as much as a 50-degree swing between two successive days. And, talk about cement, brick, metal, you name it....sweating!!! A big warm up after some cold weather and everything is dripping wet!!!<groan>

Our winter seems to come suddenly too. It’s like we have almost no fall weather. The summer just suddenly transitions into winter. The first week of October was in the eighties, and now the forecast is showing that by the end of the month the temperature highs won’t go above the fifties. I go from wearing shorts to wearing a coat within just weeks.

Yup, last year we had a record high in October (89 degrees) and one week later it was 54. A week after that we started getting into the 40s. Same thing's happening this year too. I don't like it.

Missouri has two weather alerts, a freeze warning for the next three days and a fire alert for strong winds and extremely dry conditions.

Yeah, weather is weird. We rarely get "average" weather, it's either above or below average. Another thing that I don't like is that it has only rained like once or twice since the start of summer. We have so much sun that when I wake up to a cloudy day my mood is actually better.
