My grandfather use to use hydrogen peroxide for his plants when he was younger, he said that it would make them grow better. In a way I would understand since it would allow more oxygen to the roots.

Is H2O2 safe to use around CN plants? If so, in what uses? I was thinking about putting a little in the rain water I collected before I place the containers into storage. Good idea? Bad idea? And would it be helpful against algae?

I think it would be great as a preservant to inhibit algae growth in the rain water stored. in the plants some people use it diluted, to water them, but I'm not one of them that has used the water for that.

I did a bit of research on this several weeks ago.

From what I gathered opinion is mixed. It seems the general idea is that it can have a positive effect on the plants because of the extra oxygen but it is best used on sick plants because the peroxide can kill the natural microbes in the soil which is something you don't want.

That makes sense to me. If your plant is already doing well why risk messing up the microbe population. But if you have a plat struggling along why not try it. Also, I read a few places that a peroxide mixture is especially useful if you have a plant that is developing signs of root rot since the peroxide will both kill the fungus and provide an oxygen boost.

I use it myself but mostly to keep algae away. I put about a table spoon or two into a gallon of rain water and shake it up. I only use this on my inside plants though, outside I don't care if the trays get algae.

Edit: to answer your question, I think adding it to the rain water will help with algae. H2O2 is commonly used with planted fresh water aquariums both as a plant dip and spot treatment in the tank to kill algae.

For my in door plants I don't treat the algae, I more keep it from occurring by adding a little peroxide to the jug of rain water to kill off any algae. I haven't got any algae on top of any of my pots, only a little white mold that went away on it's own. But then again I do use that same jug of water to refill my spray bottle so maybe that has some effect.

When you buy fresh water plants there is always a chance that they have algae, even if you can't see it. If you just put them in your aquarium now you've introduced the algae and it can run wild, especially if you're running a lot of light and high nutrients. A plant dip is when you mix some peroxide and water and dip your plant in it for a few minutes to kill off any algae that may be on them before putting them in your tank.

What strength hydrogen peroxide do you use and do you have any updated suggestions on how much to add to water for Venus Fly Traps? I am thinking of using hydrogen peroxide when treating VFTs for dormancy where I plan to put them in the fridge.

What I am thinking of doing is getting some of my long fiber dead sphagnum moss and soaking it in a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide where half a teaspoon of 3% is added to a cup of water. Then I will ring it out so it is just damp and put it in a tray. I then plan to put the Venus Fly traps with their roots in the sphagnum and leaves above it so they can still get light. Before I put the VFTs in the sphagnum, I plan to wash them with tap water and then soak them in distilled water for a few minutes with some hydrogen peroxide mixed with it. I wonder what strength I should try if I do that bearing in mind that I would have already wet the sphagnum moss with the hydrogen peroxide at the above strength?

I plan to put the tray of VFTs in the fridge with a light above them where the light is timed to only come on a few hours a day. I may also include a heater if needed to give some increase in temperature to simulate what will naturally happen to them in the wild during the day.

I could leave all the leaves and traps on the plants that are now very small. It could help with photosynthesis. I thought of taking leaf cuttings but perhaps the plants are too small and weak for that?
