For those who like the "Spider" Venus Flytrap, there are two interesting new clones that will be developed by the Flytrap Store Tissue Culture Lab (aka Matt :) ). These plants were specially selected by long-time Flytrap and Sarracenia grower Bob Hanrahan out of thousands of plants growing at his carnivorous plantation in the Florida panhandle (where the carnivorous plants are grown in the native soil of the area).

Bob named these plants Slim Snapper and Long Snapper. Slim Snapper has long, thin petioles like Spider and surprisingly large traps. Long Snapper has the longest petioles I've ever seen on a Flytrap; even the flower stalk was almost 2 feet tall!

The Slim Snapper and Long Snapper are part of a larger group of plants that Bob has called "the Snapper family," which also includes WIP Snapper (very large traps reminiscent of B52) and Big Red Snapper (also gigantic traps, very vigorous growth and good red color development).

The Flytrap Store is very pleased and proud to have been entrusted with the care, propagation and distribution of these great new clones and will do everything possible to ensure that they receive the attention and distribution they deserve. Development and propagation will probably happen this year, depending on Matt's (I mean, the Flytrap Store Tissue Culture Lab's) schedule, and the first small plants of some of these clones may be available late in the year or in 2011. :)

Snapper Family of Venus Flytraps
  • WIP Snapper
  • Big Red Snapper
  • Slim Snapper
  • Long Snapper

Thank, Grant. :D

I'm really happy to be working with Matt, whose tissue culture skills are developing quickly. We hope to make available quite a few interesting, unique or superior Flytrap clones over the next several years as well as develop clones and hybrids of other great (and sometimes difficult to get) plants such as Heliamphora species and some of the great new hybrids.

It's fun and a real pleasure to work with Matt. I'm already growing hundreds of Matt's tissue-culture babies here in New Mexico, US.

Awesome, Steve! Between the two of you... phew. What a great collaboration :D I think that's so great that you guys teamed up. Between flytrapcare and the great name of flytrapstore, I think you guys will do well.

I'm so excited to see what you guys will be selling. I've been bugging Matt about this, but a "Dracula" would be so amazing to have. That is the coolest looking variety :D

I agree grant. I'd like to try to get my hands on one, but they've not made the trip from overseas yet. Jason is working on getting one, though I'm not sure what the status of it is.

Nice, Matt. I know the plant that you just posted in the 'photos' section, the seed from Steve, looks really similar... but not quite the same :D ;)

I think you might have missed this post when I made it a while back Grant:

That's a plant I received from Bob Ziemer. It's a Jaws X Petite Dragon. I think it looks very similar to Dracula, even more so than the plant in this thread. What do you think?

OK...you guys really need to stop posting pictures of awesome looking flytraps. I get really really jealous of them and then I cry...or something like that.

Actually it just makes me want more and more, so uh...STOP! :x
;)

Seriously though, where do you find all these awesome looking VFTs? (if you answer "FlyTrapStore in about 4 months" I will be ecstatic)

Hah, well, they will definitely be in the FlytrapStore, but it probably won't be in 4 months. It's probably going to take Steve and I a couple of years to get most things propagated and available to the public. I'd say that there's a chance that most of the plants I have in my collection now, I'll have in TC by mid summer, which means that they'll possibly be ready for limited distribution to the public by the end of the year.

No matter what happens, we'll definitely have more of a selection this summer than we do right now and next summer (2011) we will have significantly more.

I'm not patient. I won't buy anything, but I'm not patient because then we'll have to wait for others to buy plants, then I can look at their pictures.

I'll buy some plants! I'm just not too interested in cupped trap or the all green jaws like the store has right now (sorry Matt...). Maybe if you get some of the bigger varieties or that Dracula looking thing in there...that would be sweet!
