News & Insider Scoops, November 2012

Greetings, fellow Venus flytrap enthusiasts. We hope you have had a pleasant autumn, and that your flytraps are peacefully entering their dormancy.

New & Unique Venus Flytrap Book, With FlytrapStore Contributions!

It is our pleasure to announce a spectacular new book on the Venus flytrap, to which Matt has contributed extensively: Dionaea The Venus’s Flytrap, by Tim Bailey and Stewart McPherson.

Customers outside of the United States can find the book here.

This title is the first complete monograph of "Venus's Flytrap," described by Charles Darwin as "the most amazing plant in the world," the unmistakable insect-eating plant that we all know and love. Native to only a small part of North and South Carolina, Dionaea is the most iconic plant of the United States and all of the Americas, yet it often remains misunderstood.

This long-awaited and visually beautiful book presents a uniquely detailed treatment of all aspects of the botanical history, ecology, evolutionary history, distribution and cultivation of the miraculous Venus flytrap plant.

Also included in this work are detailed descriptions and images of over 100 distinct horticultural cultivars from across the world. These include formally registered (officially recognized) cultivars, and others that have not yet been registered but are popular and well known among horticulturists in many countries. Many of the featured cultivars have never before been documented or depicted, and are introduced here for the very first time.

The full list of cultivars covered in this work is provided near the end of this newsletter, along with some photos from the book.

Matt wrote nearly 50 of the cultivar entries and provided more than 100 images for this exciting new book.

FlyTrapStore.com is the first to import copies into North America! If you place an order now, your copy will ship before Christmas (delivery by Christmas is not guaranteed however). We are currently including a special coupon that will ship with the book for 10% off your next FlytrapStore purchase.

Full Library of Carnivorous Plant Books Coming to FlytrapStore Soon

We are also proud to announce we will soon offer a range of carnivorous plant book products. A complete list of our book offerings, once listed, will be found here: FlytrapStore Carnivorous Plant Books. We will send out another newsletter when the books become available for purchase.

Inside The Lab: With Matt the Mad Scientist

Matt is back in the lab, working hard to propagate more Venus flytraps in sterile culture. Some exciting new cultivars that were initialized in tissue culture this spring and will be propagated through the winter include Schuppenstiel, Triton, Alien, Biohazard, Korrigans, Microdent, and FTS Purple Ambush, just to name a few. We hope to have most of these clones available in limited quantities in 2013.

Propagation of other newly released, high demand clones, such as Mirror and DC XL continues and we hope to have a good supply of them to offer next growing season.

If you are an international customer, you can find many of these varieties for sale already in the FlytrapStore International: Dionaea cultures in the FlytrapStore International.

As a reminder, please know that because cultures must be initiated and grown out prior to shipping, the lead time on international sterile culture orders is typically 8 to 16 weeks.

Exciting New Growing Medium Offered at FlytrapStore - Premium New Zealand Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss

After a long evaluation period this summer, we're excited to offer a new and excellent growing medium option to the Store: Premium New Zealand long fiber sphagnum moss. Our "experiment plants" performed exceptionally well growing in the New Zealand sphagnum moss this summer, and their transplant recovery is exceptional in this moss. This New Zealand sphagnum moss promotes healthy root growth and helps prevent root rot by avoiding the anaerobic conditions that often occur with peat-based mixes. The moss does dry out more quickly than our standard FlytrapStore growing medium mix of peat, sand and perlite, so if your plants can't be tended to consistently, or are often exposed to a very arid and hot climate, it's possible that this new moss might not be the best choice. It could be a good choice if you can tend to your plants often or prefer to leave your plants sitting in water all the time. We think it's terrific, and are really excited about the results we've seen.

Flies and Bugs: Other Little Tidbits

In news from our southern Oregon greenhouses, as autumn closes with color and the flytraps begin their restful dormancy slumber, we are in the midst of an awesome re-potting overhaul, which means that spring and summer should be even more carnivorously awesome than usual, with what we predict to be even better plants and traps than before (Is it even possible? We’re thinking yes!).

In other miscellany, the official FlytrapStore pet and greenhouse guard, "Bear" the cat, who is more like a dog than a cat really, has been trained to stay in a certain spot and even sit on command. We wouldn’t expect anything less from an FTS mascot!
