first leaves stuck in seed husk

Is this normal? Nearly half of my seedlings were not able to shed the husk which ends up binding the 1st leaves at the top. Some of them grow the first real leaves to one side. But some try to grow straight up and get caught under the loop that the first leaves and the husk make. Not sure yet whether this can kill a seedling. It also may be due to the fact that the seedlings were germinated in water. The husk might have absorbed a lot of water and when they dry out, it may have made the opening too small.
